From Teaching to The Olympics

A few short months ago, Shannon Vesely was closing a chapter on her long and successful career in teaching. She had spent many years teaching English. Her latest challenge was serving as School Improvement Leader at Ottumwa High School in Ottumwa, Iowa. After pouring her heart and soul into students and staff, she made the choice to retire.

That is until she received a new job offer. Before she ever set foot in a classroom, Vesely was an avid curler. Vesely was invited to serve as the assistant coach for the US Women's Olympic Curling Team in the 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in South Korea.

Her fellow assistant coach said "No doubt she will be an asset to the team, she is one of the most passionate and hard working individuals I have ever had the pleasure to work with. Curling is a lot like teaching. It takes a team to get the stone to the house. It takes a village to raise a child. On or off the ice, there's no one better."

Vesely was notified of her new offer the last week of her teaching career. Initially thinking that this might be some kind of joke she found out that she was still needed for her country. She accepted the position immediately, instantly notifying her co-workers and students. The eyes of America will be on her and the team in 2018. No doubt she will have a large fan base back home.
